This is Foggy. A 6 month old Leghorn Roo.
Standard Weights: Cock-6 pounds; hen-4-1/2 pounds; cockerel 5 pounds; pullet-4 pounds.
Skin Color: Yellow.
Egg Shell Color: White.
Use: An egg-type chicken, Leghorns figured in the development of most of our modern egg-type strains.
Origin: Leghorns take their name from the city of Leghorn, Italy, where they are considered to have originated.
Characteristics: A small, spritely, noisy bird with great style, Leghorns like to move about. They are good foragers and can often glean much of their diet from ranging over fields and barnyards. Leghorns are capable of considerable flight and often roost in trees if given the opportunity. Leghorns and their descendants are the most numerous breed we have in America today. The Leghorn has relatively large head furnishings (comb and wattles) and is noted for egg production. Leghorns rarely go broody.

Cheri. He looks just like my Henry. I'm getting frustrated in trying to rehome him. I've been seriously considering just letting him free range during the day but I'm afraid he's gonna fight with the roosters next door and I'm not sure he would come back at night. He's in a very small run during the day then sleeps with the girls at night. What do you think about letting him loose during the day so he get some excersise and gets some of his aggression out!? I just don't want anything to happen to him. _________________ The Riverhouse

Well you take a chance on him not coming home but maybe he would find a new home? Then you wouldn't feel so bad. Leghorns are resilient. Remember the story of how Foggy stayed under our shed for a week with no food or water? He had a fight with my other two roo's and has attacked me, but he steers clear of us now. _________________ Proud Momma to 3 adult children (22, 20 and 19) 3 dogs, 4 cats, 2 parakeets, 5 ducks, 24 chickens and 1 hubby. |

Well that was a farce!!!!
I went out and opened his gate. He stood there and looked at me like I had lost my mind!!! Then he finally stepped out a few steps and here come Rusty (the neighbor roo)!! Well they get into it so Henry runs back into his pen with Rusty right on his tail. Well I run out and get Rusty out of the pen and leave with Henry right on my heels like (don't leave me!!!)
So then I go into the back yard gate and Henry is right behind me. Seemed very content to stay right in the backyard but then Ty (hubby) walks through the yard and Henry attacks him!!! I get the fly swatter and he behaves but Ty says: "There is NO WAY I'm going to share this yard with that little !!@@@###!!
So I open the gate to the girls yard and the door to Henry's side of the coop and in he goes! He runs out to his little side yard. Jumps up on his roosting pole and looks at me like "Whose bright idea was all that!!!"
So I would say our first outing was a total bust!!!

Ah sorry! It hurts when a roo attacks. Rocky and Rowdy, My RIR Roo's have never attacked me. I think Rocky loves me. He does that little feather dance that he does to the other hens and then he won't leave me alone. _________________ Proud Momma to 3 adult children (22, 20 and 19) 3 dogs, 4 cats, 2 parakeets, 5 ducks, 24 chickens and 1 hubby. |

Oh it wasn't the attacking that was bad. He does that to Ty all the time. They have a mutual dislike for each other and it's been that way from the beginning! I told Ty that Henry knows what the gesture is that Ty keeps making to him!
It was all the other. I think Henry is really a wuss except for attacking Ty!
I just don't think he will adapt to free ranging and I'm just wondering if the other rooster will ever leave him alone.
I'm just going to take it slow a day at a time.
