I think I have a broody Ancona hen. She is mean and pecks me. She stays on the nest all day but won't lay an egg. This morning I took the egg (RIR) she was sitting on and she pitched a hissy fit!! So Chelsea and I went back, she was still there. We found 6 more eggs and placed them under her. She took them and then rolled them under her. I called the feed barn lady and she said it sounds like she is broody. She told me to keep an eye on her.

Up north, they are broody hen, down here in Texas they are setting hen. Cheri be sure you mark the eggs you have her setting on, otherwise you will find that other hens get in with her and lay fresh eggs and you won't know which is which. I have 5 setting at the moment but I don't want chicks at the moments. Although, if I can find my guineas nest, then I will set those eggs. I have them isolated because they are taking up to many of my nesting boxes. Hope you have some pretty babies.

Thanks Bob. I think they will be mutts. I took her eggs yesterday and then gave her two this morning. I gave her one ancona egg and one RIR egg. The dads would either be a mixture of RIR or Leghorn. So I may just get a full blooded RIR.
