Strawberries

I've had about 8 wild strawberry plants for a good few years now and they have grown massive! We get a fair few strawberries from them too! I think slugs got 1 a few weeks ago but since then we put straw around the bases which has kept them away nicely! Very Happy

Oh man I love wild strawberries. We got a wild grape vine in our yard.

Yeah they grow quite well over here! I think there's a pub down the road with a grape vine aswell!

I tried strawberries again this year and bombed!!! They grow perfect but the rabbits out here get them!! As soon as they get pinky the rabbits dine on them!! I guess I should feel good for feeding the poor wild animals, right?
Cheri

Yes you should!!

Two things I knew the Riverhouse had to have when we built 2 years ago were chickens and a strawberry patch.

I never had much luck with strawberries in the city but I was determined to do well with them here.

My hubby built a nice bed right up against the back of the guest cabin. It's 12' by 10'
We filled it with good sandy soil and I planted 20 plants the 1st spring. Here they are now. They die down in the winter and I cover them with straw and good compost. They came back even better this year. Now they are starting to die down again.

I keep the little fence around them and bird mess covers the entire bed to keep birds and rabbits and skunks out. Seems to work well for me.

They say you need to replace your plants about every 4 years. But my Mom never replaced hers and they kept coming back for years so who knows!!

Yeah i've had mine for well over 4 years now and they always bounce back in spring!

Right Mooney. so, so much for that direction. I just can't see pulling up healthy plants that are still producing.
